This paper will descri be Voice Over Internet Protocol (Vo IP) to a level that allows discu ssi on of security issu es and concerns. Business concerns of imp leme nt ing Vo IP , comp onents of a Vo IP syst em, and relevant security issu es and concerns as they apply to the topic s, are explored. The business concerns will be those that affect Quality of Se rvice (Q oS) . VoIP components will include end - user equipment, network components , call processors, gateways and two of the mo re commo n arch itectures : H.323 and Se ssi on Initiation Pro tocol ( SIP ) . Denial of service will be discussed, and, e ncryption and network address translation (N AT ) will be discu sse d emp hasizing how they impact the im leme ntation of Vo IP.
